About Magnolia Path

Magnolia Path Consulting Group is a Kaohsiung-based advisory firm specialising in succession planning for family-owned businesses across Taiwan, established in 2011.

Official registered business

Magnolia Path Consulting Group is the registered business name under which we operate. We were established in 2011 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, to address a gap we observed repeatedly: capable family businesses stalling at the point of ownership transition, not because of market conditions, but because generations had never been given a structured space to discuss what comes next.

Our origin

The firm was founded by Dr. Huang Yi-Chen, who spent fourteen years in corporate restructuring before returning to southern Taiwan to advise the manufacturing and distribution companies her own extended family had built. She noticed that accountants and lawyers handled the paperwork of succession well, but no one was facilitating the conversations that had to happen first — about fairness, capability, and timing.

Magnolia Path began as a solo practice operating from a shared office in Yancheng District. By 2015, demand from second-generation owners in Tainan and Chiayi led us to expand to a dedicated team of four advisors. Today we work with approximately thirty active family engagements per year, ranging from single-day workshops to multi-year transition support.

What we believe

Family businesses are not failed corporations waiting for professional management. They operate under different rules — loyalty, history, and unspoken obligation shape decisions as much as spreadsheets do. Our work respects that reality rather than trying to impose a textbook corporate model.

We believe succession should be planned while the founder is still engaged, not negotiated from a hospital bed or a courtroom. We believe next-generation members deserve honest assessment of their readiness, not automatic entitlement. And we believe documented agreements, even imperfect ones, prevent more damage than years of polite avoidance.

Our team

Dr. Huang Yi-Chen — Founder and Lead Advisor. Doctorate in organisational behaviour, former restructuring consultant. Leads all readiness assessments and complex multi-branch family engagements.

James Wu — Senior Advisor. Former CFO of a listed food distribution group. Specialises in financial continuity planning and dividend policy design during transition periods.

Lin Shu-Ting — Advisor and Coach. Certified executive coach with a background in family therapy. Leads next-generation coaching and facilitated family sessions.

Amy Tsai — Research Associate. Manages interview scheduling, document review, and report preparation. First point of contact for new enquiries.

Working approach

We begin every engagement with listening — individual conversations before any group session. We write things down. We do not take sides between family members, but we do name patterns when we see them repeating. We refer out for legal, tax, and valuation work rather than blurring professional boundaries.

Our Kaohsiung office at Office 8, 29 Example Avenue serves as the base for southern Taiwan clients. We travel to client premises across the island and conduct video sessions for families based in Taipei, Taichung, and overseas.

Community

We contribute pro bono facilitation time to the Kaohsiung Family Business Network, a quarterly gathering of owners who meet to share transition experiences without commercial pressure. We also publish Field Notes — practical writing on succession topics drawn from our advisory work (with all identifying details removed).
